In holdem, the initial step is to get the card game started, and for this the players put out a set amount of money. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the commonly used saying for this play. In the following step, the croupier shuffles the cards and deals out 2 cards face down to each player. A normal deck of 52 cards is used. After the deal, there is the first sequence of betting. This round is typically referred to as a "pre-flop".

Following the 1st wagering sequence, the top card of the deck is discarded. This thrown away card is called the "burn card", and this is performed to guarantee that there is absolutely no cheating. The next 3 cards are then dealt face up on the poker table. These cards are referred to as ‘the flop’. Now follows a second sequence of wagering, after which the dealer burns an additional card and deals one more card onto the table. After this, competitors can utilize the 6th card to form a 5card poker hand.

Another round of wagering happens, and in a good many types of poker, here is where the bet size doubles. There is a further round of burning a card, and a final deal of a card face-up on the poker table. This is known as the "river". Competitors can now use any of the 5 cards on the board, and/or the 2 cards that they are holding, to create a 5card poker hand.

To finish it up there’s another sequence of wagering. After that, all the players remaining begin to display their hands. This is called the "showdown". Clearly, the bettor who holds the highest hand wins. When gamblers have tied hands a splitting of the pot is considered.

Holdem is a very easy game to learn, but to acquire ability it requires a fair amount of practice.
