Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he loved taking part in different card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he would play extensive hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he might better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The real improvement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently play against each other. He was able to access a few of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
