Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he played many hours and lost most times. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention more on the game.
The definite improvement in his skills began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often challenge one another. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his cunning thinking techniques. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
